Conscious Divorce™ · Twenty-five years · Now Badass Divorce™

She wrote the book on leaving without shrinking.

In 2001, Random House published Conscious Divorce™ and the premise was called unsellable: that a marriage could end with integrity instead of war. It sold. It worked. Twenty-five years later, the culture is calling it badass divorce.

Her story

A marriage, and a divorce, decades ahead of its time.

Dr. Allison’s first marriage paired an artist with a scientist, and for years she lived under pressure to think in straight lines that were never hers to think in. Leaving terrified her: the financial dependence, the judgment, the unraveling of a life other people expected her to keep intact. She left anyway.

She has said since that she could not have become who she is now without that divorce, without refusing to make herself smaller to keep everyone else comfortable.

What nobody tells you about leaving.

Ending the marriage was never the finish line. The version of her who survived it, composed, practical, strong because she had to be, was never the whole story. There is a woman underneath the one who gets through it, and leaving with integrity is what makes room for her to stop surviving and start taking up space again.

Leaving with integrity was never about being nice about it. It was about refusing to let the ending shrink you.

She decided

The conversation is already happening. Women are leading it.

Divorce is not only something that happens to women. Very often it is something they decide, and now they are saying so out loud.

What these women don’t have yet is a framework underneath the story. Dr. Susan Allison, Ph.D., has been building one for twenty-five years.

“Conscious uncoupling” goes public

The phrase enters everyday conversation when Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin announce their separation.

2026

Conscious Divorce™ turns twenty-five

In the same year, the Associated Press reports on “Divorce-tok,” women building audiences by telling their divorce stories in public.

Different name. Same truth. Said once, plainly, and without bitterness: a divorce can be the beginning of her becoming.

The Badass Divorce™ movement

Beyond the aftermath: six ways to rise.

Badass Divorce™ is not about the paperwork or the wreckage. It is an empowerment movement for the woman who walks out the other side.

01

Leave with integrity

Not nice, and not a war. Awareness, patience and dignity from the first hard conversation to the life that comes after.

02

Refuse to shrink

Women are asked to get smaller to make an ending easier on everyone else. This is the refusal.

03

Root before the rebound

Get honest about the self you built to survive, before you build the next chapter on top of her.

04

Feel all of it

Grief that practical advice can’t reach. Body, mind and spirit all get a say, and nothing has to be hurried.

05

Women holding women

Nobody rebuilds alone. Conversation, circles and a tribe of women who have walked it before you.

06

Become

The ending was never the finish line. It is the beginning of her becoming.

Questions

What women ask about a conscious divorce.

What is a conscious divorce?

One undertaken with deep awareness of every phase and every consequence. It means assessing your readiness by following your intuition, then taking action in stages, with awareness, patience and, ultimately, peace.

Is Conscious Divorce™ the same as Badass Divorce™?

Conscious Divorce™ is the 2001 book and the idea behind it. Badass Divorce™ is the name for the empowerment movement that grows from it: the conversation about what a woman builds after the ending.

Is a conscious divorce only for amicable divorces?

No. Conscious does not mean you owe anyone your silence or your safety. It is about how you carry yourself and the choices you make, whatever the other person does. If you are in danger, please reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline at thehotline.org.

Is this legal or financial advice?

No. Dr. Susan Allison, Ph.D., is a psychologist and author, not an attorney or a financial advisor. The book covers the practical side of divorce, including planning, but you should work with qualified professionals for your own situation.

How is this different from “conscious uncoupling”?

Conscious Divorce™ was published in 2001. The phrase “conscious uncoupling” entered public conversation in 2014. Both point toward ending a marriage with respect. The book is a full guide to the practical steps, the emotions and the healing that follow.

Where can I find the book?
